The DNV has plans to create a new mini-forest on the Welch Strip near the Spirit Trail.
Mini-Forests are small-scale biodiverse hotspots that help to restore the native habitat and support pollinators and local wildlife. They are created using the Miyawaki method, which involves planting densely layered native trees and understory vegetation to produce small mature forests. The upcoming project is on Nov.22 and will involve planting 500 native plants on roughly 100 sm plot on the Welch Strip just west of Tatlow Ave. Volunteer opportunities will include initial planting, followed by weeding and maintenance events.
If you have any feedback, questions or concerns about the mini-forest initiative please contact the DNV Section Manager-Environmental Sustainability (Operations) Acting – Erika Nassichuk, (604) 990-2429 [email protected] .
